A Petit Collage Tutorial

A while ago on vacation, I remember distinctly this giant painting of a cut orange. It was bright and bold . . . and fabulous. I instantly fell in love with it, and the image never left my mind. But, I'll remind you, it was a painting . . . and well . . . I'm no painter . . . at least not of detailed images anyway. So, in order to recreate it, I needed to come up with a better solution.

That is when I decided to experiment with petit collage.

Step 1: Decide on your colors and cut out a bazillion scrap pieces from all your old magazines.

Step 2: Outline your image on your canvas. (Try not to worry too much about making it so "perfect." I honestly think petit collage is meant to NOT be perfect...)

Step 3: Paint your background.

Step 4: Begin gluing (or Mod Podging) your scrap pieces on the canvas, using your freehand drawing as a guide. (I chose to use scraps of text as my outline.)

Step 5: Place it on your mantel, stand back and smile.

Well, I imagine it's no surprise that you'd see the color orange splashed here and there. I guess I just haven't been able to get enough of it in this house. I ended up pairing the orange accents in the room with "Quilt Gold" by Sherwin Williams. And, I'll be honest, yellow is a scary color to choose. It always looks lighter on the wall than it does on your paint chip! But, I've been quite happy with this particular color, and I can't say I wouldn't choose it again.

I'm happy to say, this room has been used a lot in the last 2 years, mostly by my parents . . . who come to visit a certain little girl quite frequently! :) It's been so nice. I hate to see a guest room never in use.

Annie found this old lamp base at a thrift store and made the to-die-for shade!

(I nearly had a panic attack when I opened it up last Christmas!)

After gathering up a few old fabric scraps I had, I just started gluing . . .

and gluing . . .
until . . .

until, well . . . I was happy.

Now, they hang in our guest room, along with a couple $1 thrift store frames.

I've always been a list maker.

In fact, at this very moment, I could probably make a list of all the lists I've made around here.

It keeps my head clear and my mind in the right direction.

So, I couldn't help but feel a bit giddy at the invitation to make a list of goals I have for my blog.

I've been blogging for several years now, but it wasn't until recently that I branched out and started focusing more on the "Home Projects" side of blogging. Mainly because, what once was a hobby for me, became a passion. Blogging just happened to be the icing on the cake.

As most bloggers might say, I truly enjoy blogging, regardless of how it grows. But, it's nice to take a second and reflect on what exactly I want for my blog . . . in the chance that it might.

1. Inspire Others.
First and foremost, I want to motivate readers. I want them to get out of Target and into a Goodwill. There's so many wonderful things yet to be found! You never know what kind of prize might be sitting on that dusty, dirty shelf . . .

2. Quality Posts.

I want my posts to be useful. I'd rather have 2 super great posts per week than 5 mediocre ones.

3. Spread More Love.
There's too many great blogs out there not to. I hope to give readers great ideas, but also point them in the right direction of others that can do the same.

4. Cutting-Edge.
Things are changing all the time! With the speed at which technology is constantly being updated and changed around, it's way too easy to get left behind. I hope to spend a little more time researching new ideas and learning from the successes of others.

5. A Happy Home.
Ultimately, I want this to be a place that readers can come and feel good . . .

After getting several comments/questions about the wine cork board in the dining room, I realized I never even posted about it. If you didn't know already, it's a knock-off from on old Pottery Barn idea, and I'm sure you can imagine how simple it really is. Honestly, it's a matter of collecting all those wine corks! (Luckily, a got a little help from a few very special people...)

After getting a large piece of particle board framed out . . .

Grady and I simply started hot gluing the corks- in somewhat of a checker board pattern.

Now, it holds all the thousands of photos I take of Ross. :)

I was beside myself when Holly Kapherr from Babytalk magazine contacted me a while ago and wanted to publish a picture of Ross's nursery in the upcoming March issue! She just sent me the article, and I could barely contain myself long enough to show you!

The Easiest Curtains Ever Made

Seriously. They really are.

All you'll need is . . .

After installing your curtain rod (I placed mine as high as I possibly could on the wall), measure the length from the rod to the floor- allowing extra fabric for finishing edges (about 2 inches). (Remember that you can always cut off fabric if you have extra, but if it's too short- it's much harder to fix!) This measurement, TIMES 2 (one for each panel) is how much burlap (or fabric of your choice) you'll need to buy.

Once you have your fabric, simply roll it out and finish the top and bottom edges by folding under about an inch, ironing and then sewing a straight stitch. If you're using burlap, the sides are already finished, so you won't have to do a thing!

Lastly, simply pin and sew your trim at the bottom. (It's hard to tell from the picture, but my trim is orange.)

A Toddler Pillowcase Tutorial

With Ross getting so big, it's inevitable that we'll be making the "big girl room" transition soon. And, in order to help make the transition easier, my plan is to slowly make small changes . . . one of which, is the addition of a pillow.

You probably already know IKEA makes a sweet, little toddler pillow insert . . . but I didn't see too many pillowcase choices to go along.

Using left over fabric from her curtains, I cut a piece large enough to wrap the pillow loosely (roughly 31in. x 31in).

Next, I folded the fabric in half (right sides together) and pinned it. I sewed (straight stitch and zig-zag stitch) 2 of the open edges, leaving one open end.

Then, I finished the open side by folding it down about a 1/4in., ironed it and sewed it.

After I finished the edge, I folded (and ironed) the same edge down again- this time about 5 inches down . . .

and sewed it all the way around my pillowcase.

At this point the actual pillowcase is done . . . the next few steps are optional!

Next, I cut an extra long strip of fabric

(enough to go around your pillow at least 1 and a half times).

Then, I sewed a straight stitch all the way down the middle of my strip

and tied a knot on one side.

Next, I began pulling the top string of the side opposite of the knot until it started to gather. You'll need to keep pulling the top string until the length of your fabric matches the length of your pillowcase.

Lastly, I pinned and sewed the ruffle on the pillowcase.

So, I guess you're probably either laughing . . . or rolling your eyes right about now.
But, I assure you, I have two very good reasons for this new sign . . .

ONE:
The blasted door bell "ding" is RIGHT beside Ross's room . . . and the only time we seem get guests is inevitably when she is napping. I can't tell you how infuriating it is! She's such a light sleeper and wakes up on the drop of a dime . . . you better believe she wakes up when the UPS man dings . . . or the mailman dings . . . or the pest control dings . . .

TWO:
The doorbell is broken. *smile*

So, when I smelled the sweet smell of burnt up doorbell wires . . . I got to work.

Using a thrifted picture frame (spray painted black long ago) and Domestically Speaking's fabulous burlap printing tutorial, I made my sign.

So long and farewell, doorbell.

Nanny Needed a New Coffee Table

I don't like sanding and I don't like using primer either. I like to see results quickly! Nevertheless, the top of Nanny's table had a sheen so I lightly sanded it before I painted. I didn't sand any other part of the table. Painted furniture is more likely to chip and scratch if it is not sanded and/or primed so I frequently go with the "roughed up" look. (Some may call it Shabby Chic or distressed but my mom once said to me, "If you want to buy something that has a lot of marks or scratches on it, bang on it with your hammer and sand it a little. That is called the roughed up look."

I've been a fan of the "roughed up" look for several years now.

I used a stencil for the chandelier and damask images on the tops. Finally, after the paint dried I lightly sanded the table(s) to reveal the dark wood underneath. The roughed up approach is best because Nanny is in college and this table will ~~see a lot of action~~ be used a lot.

Which coffee table do you like best? The readers of mommy is coocoo were almost evenly divide. The chandelier table won out by one vote, which was perfect because Nanny (who had the ultimate vote) chose the Chandelier table.

I haven't been sewing too much lately, but I ran across this SUPER, SUPER, SUPER easy tutorial on pinterest about how to make "Baby Legs," out of socks. It seriously turned out to be the easiest sewing project ever!

And since I'd been wanting to try out Rustoleum's Chalkboard spray paint for some time now. . . I thought I'd give it a-GO on my bench!

Surely there's something else around my house I can spray paint with it . . .

The Life of a Thrifter

I'll just be honest and tell you . . . thrifting, has become an overwhelming high of excitement for me. I love that I don't ever know what I'm going to find. And, even better, chances are, not many people have it.

I'm aware many of you are completely grossed out by even just the thought of a thrift store (and I'm here to tell you, I've been in many where you'd have every right to be), however; if you do it enough, there's no doubt you'd see the benefits outweigh the drawbacks by far.

Now, with that said, I do take precautions. I would absolutely, positively recommend a good cleaning on anything you buy. I don't hesitate to wash whatever I can in HOT water. Even when not suggested, I'll still hand wash . . . in HOT water. This crocheted blanket I just found went through the wash and dryer without a prob. And, really and truly . . . it was $2!!!
SO WHAT if there was a problem!

So. What in the world are you waiting on?
FIND A THRIFT STORE ALREADY. . . just not mine.

The Big Kitchen Reveal!

There's been an addition . . . and it's a kitchen . . . in the kitchen.

Let me just start by saying Grady and I have been blessed tremendously to have 2 fabulously handy fathers. Grady's dad didn't even blink an eye when I asked him to copy this a few months ago. And, it was absolutely no surprise that it came out even more incredible than I had imagined it.

Annie played a pretty big part as well, sewing and painting and fixing up old baby doll high chairs . . .

Surely you haven't forgotten that perfect little shelf . . .

or the little brown mirror I found a few days ago?

I still can't believe how perfect those finds were.

At one time, I wondered if it might be hard to part with the cozy little seating area we once had here . . .

until I began to see this sweet little image day in and day out.

And, now, I really can't imagine anything better.

I also found a vintage table cloth at an antique store for $8 that I used to recover the seat. My mom who is oh so talented and crafty embroidered a design around the edge of the seat. So it has quite alot of personality!

A Table for Art

I'll have you know, I've been saving this table . . .

and chairs . . .

for years.

The table, I found at a flea market, and it sat in my kindergarten classroom for several years, while the chairs stacked in my garage until I'd collected enough from various thrift stores.

And, now, finally, it's time that they all come together . . . as they should be.

But first, I needed a bit of a change.

I started by painting the top silver (kind of an odd color for me on furniture . . . but I'm always willing to try new things in decorating), the legs teal and the chairs green.

When that was dry, I got out all my paint colors on hand . . .

and splatter-painted the top.

I mean, seriously. Why not? It's gonna end up looking that way regardless, right?

And, I guess you recognize that chalkboard . . .

Needless to say, we've been pretty busy around here.

Thank goodness I found these things the other day (all at the same shop, mind you), so that I could get a little bit closer to showing you how our house has changed for the better.

It just so happened that all 3 of these things were exactly what I needed . . . and at exactly the right time.

It was simply . . . perfect.

Old Wooden Children's Desk

Annie actually found this desk years ago as a temporary sewing desk replacement (since my sewing desk ended up in Ross's room). If I recall correctly, she said it was $10. Pop, Ross's grand daddy, built a whole new top for it.

Well, since I purchased a desk at IKEA for my sewing table a few months back, this desk had been sitting and needed a new home. I caught wind that my nephew needed a desk in his room and knew it'd be a perfect match!

Hello! I am so excited to be here sharing with you all today. I am Megan, and I blog over at Balancing Home. I used to rock kid's minds (yeah, I was a teacher), but now I'm rocking out at home with my seven-month-old daughter and my three-year-old son. I am all about making my home and my time with my kids fabulous. I love creating, and I love sharing. Being a stay-at-home mom wasn't going to keep this girl quiet! Thus, Balancing Home was born. I am an ordinary girl, turned ordinary mom, on a less-than ordinary budget trying to make it all work. I also partnered up with my husband (graphic design extraordinaire) to start a print shop.

Today, I want to talk about some rummage sale flowers I posted about here. A while ago, I picked up four flowers for a quarter each at a rummage sale.

I decided to only makeover three since one was a little funky (it was taller and had a bigger base) and things look best in threes. Those of you who saw the letters I made for Eleanor's room (seen here) are going to know exactly how I rocked out this makeover. I started by spray painting the flowers white.

Then, I took my lovely paper and cut it down to size. For the second time that day I got to use my handy cutter my mom swooped up from TJMaxx. She knew it was just the kind of thing a crafty girl like me would love. It is pretty sweet.

Gorgeous? I think so!

Fandangled Cutter

So there you have it, a crafty girls best friends: scrapbooking paper and spray adhesive. For those of you keeping track spray adhesive-already had, flowers-$1.00, scrapbooking paper-$1.00 (probably less with discounts), spray paint-already had...grand total-$2.00 at most.

On to the next step. I simply sprayed and attached the paper. I only did one side at a time. I figured doing both sides at once would make cutting extra tricky.

At this point me and the X-ato knife (and cutting mat) got down to business. I simply repeated on the other side (spray, adhere, trim). To be honest my trimming gauged into my paint job a bit and the spray paint didn't cover as much as I wanted to so I went back over everything with a little acrylic craft paint. I was really glad I did because it took no time at all and gave the flowers the finished look I was after.

To finish them off I added a little ribbon around the base with some spray adhesive (and yes, this was ribbon I already had, meaning...free!). Here is what they look like in the little lady's room,

I do recall a husband of mine questioning why I would have ever bought those flowers. He didn't believe I could make them look good, and I think I proved him wrong (he agrees). For $2.00 I couldn't be prouder.

I love giving things new life. I hope I have inspired you to take the ugly and make it beautiful. You don't need a lot of money, just a little creativity and craftiness.

Knock-Off Anthropologie Letters

Happy New Year, guys! I hope everyone had a splendid holiday! Time to get back in the swing of things around here, and I've got the perfect project for it!

As you know, I've been working on the laundry room the last few months . . . trying to add a little something to the bare walls. I ran across this project by Kristen Davis Designs a long time ago . . . thinking how fun and easy it looked! And after doing it (a bit different than she did) . . . it was even easier than I imagined!

I started with plain cardboard letters from Hobby Lobby at $2.50 a piece.

Then, spray painted them.

Lastly, I sanded them a bit to take the shine out.

And, what's best of all, the letters are so light weight, all you need to hang them are Command strips!

I'm quite thrilled.

For the Bride & Groom

Two of our good friends are getting married this May . . . on Cinco de Mayo, in fact! So a few friends and family got together over the holidays and threw them a little shower. My mother-in-law (a.k.a. "Annie") came up with the most fun idea for their gift . . .

We started with a large piece of painted plywood.

Using Word, we printed out the number "5" (the month and day of the wedding).

I put the cut out "5" on an overhead projector and traced the projected "5" on the plywood.

Then, we cut out and glued photos of the couple inside the traced "5."

Once it was done, we painted the entire piece of plywood with Mod Podge.

The final product came out looking like this.

I'll confess, I'm a bit jealous I don't have one for myself.

Voices 4 the Voiceless

Several months ago I was privileged to take a photography class with one very inspiring couple, Brantley & Richard. I could tell immediately their eagerness to help others and even more importantly their strong devotion to God. It was no surprise that a little while later I received an e-mail from Brantley announcing that she had just launched Voices 4 the Voiceless, a non-profit organization focusing on raising money for orphans. Their purpose is to be the VOICE for those that do not have one.

Currently, they are working to raise money to feed the orphans and the fatherless in Uganda. Their goal is to raise enough money to feed approximately 1,800 orphans for one week. And, in fact, Brantley and Richard have plans to travel to Uganda in March to deliver the funds personally and actually see the money put to use.

With so much that we have, I know that it is almost incomprehensible to imagine that there are people literally dying of starvation everyday. I hope so much that you'll find it in your heart to join with me in donating to Voices 4 the Voiceless.

Stockings for the Grandparents

We are thrilled that my parents (a.k.a. Mimi & Papa) will be spending Christmas Eve with US this year! We've spend years now rush, rush, rushing around from this house to that, and haven't once spent the night at our own house on Christmas Eve. And, now with Ross . . . well, we just felt like we needed to make a change.

Anyway, with Mimi & Papa here this year, we of course, needed a few more stockings!

I found these green stockings at Target.

I printed out an "M" and "P" from Word . . .

then traced it using a Sharpie directly on top of a section of freezer paper.

(Be aware you'll be putting the shiny side against your fabric.)

Once you've traced your letter, you'll see a slight imprint from the Sharpie bleeding through on the freezer paper. Using an Xacto knife, carefully cut out your stencil on the freezer paper.

Next, iron the stencil to your fabric (shiny side down) and carefully paint over the stencil.

Once it dries, peel the freezer paper away.

A Simple Christmas Dining Room

After I had my advent up, I realized I usually use that big, silver tree for my "12 Days of Christmas" ornaments each year. So I've been running around the house searching for a spot to display them.

Turns out it was kinda fun adding a bit of Christmas to the bookshelves this year.

Peace Sign Art

For some reason, I got in my head that instead of a wreath, I wanted a peace sign on our front door this year. I searched around hoping to be able to find one already made, but found that the only one I really wanted was way beyond my budget.

So, once again I pulled out the plywood.

After a quick coat of paint, I drew my peace sign . . .

and painted it green.

I sanded it down to beat it up a bit . . .

then hung it on the door.

I'll conclude, there's not too many things better than a peace sign.

A Christmas Mantel

If you've been following along for a while, then you recognize the record artwork from last year . . . only I've added a new flashing wreath. I'm in love with those old school big bulbs and was most pleased to find a few strands at the thrift store for $1 a piece. Two small strands fit perfectly on the wire wreath I found at Carolina Pottery for only 5 bucks.

Even better . . . every morning that Ross and I come downstairs, her eyes light up and she screams, "Lights! Lights!" It's nice to know that a one year old can appreciate decorating just as much as I do . . . *smile*

Our Stockings

I told you I was determined to make us a set of stockings this year. And, like I said earlier, I originally thought I would (try to) make sweater stockings. In fact, I was running around town to all the thrift stores in search of sweaters . . . that is, until I saw this old Christmas rug waiting on me in the "Christmas section." Its faded-out letters and old school santas kind of reminded me of old grain sacks and thought surely I could recreate this rug . . . into our stockings.

First, I traced a handmade stocking pattern on the rug with a pencil. I pinned my backside fabric to the rug and cut out both fabrics . . .

which left me with this.

Next, I sewed the edges of both fabrics at the top of the stockings. Then, I sewed all the way around the stockings several times (both zig zag stitch and straight stitch) . . . just to be sure it would hold all of Santa's loot.

Originally, I thought I'd do a red zig zag stitch around the edges . . . however, I couldn't seem to get it looking right. In the end, I used a heavy duty yarn needle and hand sewed all the way around the stocking.

Lastly, I took a scrap piece from the original rug and hand sewed (with doubled-up heavy duty thread) a small loop at the top corner.

I got a few letters from Hobby Lobby and tied it with a strand of jute rope.

I'm THRILLED to finally have stockings up this year!

Hopefully Santa can get on the ball and find a few things to go inside!!

Favorite Stockings

Picture Ornaments

I've been pretty taken back with the traffic I've gotten because of these simple little ornaments I did last year. So much so, that I thought it might be worthwhile to revisit this project.

I started with large, glass ornaments (these particular ornaments came from Carolina Pottery) and all of our old Christmas card photos from years past.

Just a little note . . . most of my pictures started out 4x6, but I had to cut them all to size. I used tweezers and a pair of scissors to move the picture around or flatten it out how I wanted it. It took a couple practice times . . . so be sure you make copies of your pictures, as they do tend to bend or possibly tear if you have to pull it back out. Twisting it out is the easiest way to get it back out.

I've gotten lots of fabulous comments about neat things to add . . . like tinsel, or yarn, or other cute things. There's just so many possibilities.

Speaking of Wire Baskets . . .

I snatched this one up at the Goodwill a long time ago, and last week it came to me how it could be best used (at the moment).

If you've looked at pictures of the nursery, then you know how many books we're constantly trying to keep up with. And, to make matters worse, lately we've been making pretty frequent trips to the library. I don't think I have to tell you how easily your own books can get confused with the library's.

Yep, you guessed it . . . our very own "Library Book Basket."

Is it sad that this little basket brought so much relief . . . ?

Probably.

Blog Post Trade-Off: Everyday Lovely

Hello! I'm Cailan from Everyday Lovely, and I'm positively delighted to be over here at adorable Holly's cheerful, thrify-fun blog. :)

Today, I'm going to share an idea for an quick,

inexpensive {and lovely!} Christmas gift, you can make yourself:

Numbered Bottle Cap Magnets.

First, gather yourself a little collection of bottle caps, enlisting helpfully thirsty people to contribute for a few weeks until you have 10.

Then, sort through the microsoft fonts and decided on one you like. I liked SimSun-ExtB for it's simplicity. I printed several out, trying to get the right size and in the end used some numbers in size 62 and some in 49ish for extra-fun variety.

At this point it would be handy to have some sort of crafty circle punch, but I have nothing anywhere near that nifty, so I just eye-balled and cut and trimmed a circle that fit and then used that as I guide for the others.

Then, get out your Mod Podge and the whatever paintbrush you can find in kiddos' craft cupboard.

Brush some Mod Podge on the bottom of the cap, put the number in and then coat the top.

Then hot-glue these heavy-duty magnets from Walmart to the backs.

At this point, I decided they looked a bit too crisp and white, so I got out some Old English furniture polish.

Added a bit of the polish to my glue plate, brushed a coat of it on top of the dried Mod Podge, and wiped it mostly off with a paper towel. You could add a coat of resin at this point, but that would add to the cost and mine have held up perfectly peachily for months now.

So here they are: sweet-little-antiqued-numbered-bottle-cap-magnets.

And really, since I already had the Mod Podge and furniture polish, the only cost was the magnets, which were $6 for 50/ $1.20 for the 10 I used - woohoo.

Guaranteed to make your friend's fridge {or cute chalkboard!}
feel extra-special-pretty.

A $5 Fireplace Screen Makeover

I was beside myself when I ran across this old fireplace screen at the Goodwill a few weeks ago. I knew I had to have something to block the baby from a roaring, hot fire this winter, so when I saw this propped up against the wall with a $5 price tag on it, I snatched it right up!

Now, don't get me wrong, I do enjoy a bit of gold here and there, but this . . . was just a little too much.

Luckily, we all know what a little spray paint can do . . .

It did just what I needed.

Home Tour: The Dining Room

I mentioned earlier that this room is intentionally our only eating area (excluding the kitchen counter bar, that is). It's meant to be informal and casual. I've always wanted a dining room to be a place where people felt comfortable pulling up a chair and joining in. Of course, if I had more room, I would have gotten an even bigger table to allow for even more chairs (because if you haven't gathered already, I have a small obsession with old wooden chairs)!

Originally, the chairs were all brown, but recently, I took the plunge and painted them all white. (You can see that project HERE.) I'd probably prefer a fun rug to go under all those chairs, but a toddler, food and rugs don't tend to mesh well.

The buffet you see back there was an old bar my mother-in-law found at a thrift store years ago. I sanded it down, painted it a mustard yellow, and attached a few wine glass racks. It has really served it's purpose well in this space.

The wine cork board you see on the wall was a knock-off from Pottery Barn that Grady and I made a few years back. I've never stopped loving it!

It's rare that you'll see fancy dishes or fine crystal in this room, but I've discovered I tend to like it that way . . .

Here is a plain old green rug from Ikea 15 years ago

that I bleached into a chevron pattern.

Now I love it! It fits great in my mud room and have used it as a table runner too (after a fresh wash of course).

Salvaged Wood Lamp

When I checked a local website's FREE section, I couldn't stop myself from filling my minivan with salvaged barn and fence wood. Then my lamp was born.

World Map Mural

When I opened the Pottery Barn Kids catalog a few years ago I fell in love with their huge wall mural. It was a simple outline of a world map.

I've broken it down and made it super easy to do yourself.

Our Advent Calendar

Well, this weekend I finally got my thoughts together and made an advent calendar.

Remember the Coca-Cola crate I found last weekend? Well, that was one of those items I bought with an idea in mind . . .

I found these foam numbers at Hobby Lobby . . .

(I wasn't all too thrilled with the colors they chose, so I painted a few of them.)

and these (shatter-proof) Christmas ornaments at Walmart.

You can probably gather the rest . . . but I simply hot glued the foam letters to the ornaments. (Note: the backs of the the foam numbers were sticky, however it just wasn't enough to hold well.)

And, lastly, the best part of all . . . displaying them in the crate.

I have to say . . . this is getting me pretty excited about Christmas!!

An Advent Calendar

I have always loved an advent calendar. I grew up with one that looks almost identical to this one . . .

So Happy

My parents have always gone all out for Christmas, and that advent tree brought some of the most wonderful memories for me. As a child, I couldn't wait to get down the stairs and put another ornament on that tree! It certainly wasn't Christmas without it . . . which is why I knew there'd need to be one for our kids.

I've spend several weeks now racking my brain for ideas, and I believe I've gotten a good start with these . . .

And, my personal "adult" favorite . . .

Blog Post Trade-Off: Make the Best of What's Around

Hi there! My name is Tanya from Make The Best Of What's Around. This is my very first time doing a guest post. I am so excited to be blog swapping with Holly @ Life As A Thrifter. Like Holly, I too am a thrifter. I love finding old, inexpensive things and giving them new life. Today, I'm going to share with you a makeover of a tray I found at a Habitat For Humanity Store. My husband picked this dingy old thing up at Habitat For Humanity. He knows what I love.

I gave the tray a good sanding and chose to spray it with Krylon Blue Ocean Breeze.

I used a block sander and distressed the edges. I like more of a rustic look.

To make it nice and cheery, I Mod Podged some bright and a little vintage looking paper to the bottom of the tray, let it dry and...

it now sits on my kitchen counter where I use it to hold my coffee accessories. I can't go a day without have a cup of french press coffee.

This was a very frugal project. You can makeover just about anything with a bit of paint, Mod Podge, and cute scrapbook paper.

Flea Market Finds

Well, there's no doubt I could have bought truck loads more! Nevertheless, I came home with some really fun finds. Some of these I knew exactly what to do with . . . and some I just couldn't leave without.

AND, to top it off, Fleming and I found 2 new thrift stores on the way home that day! You'll have to stay tuned for those . . .

A Family-Friendly Home

Recently, I got a few comments asking how I was able to keep a "family-friendly" home. I'm not so sure I'm the best one to answer this question, but I'll certainly try my best.

Although children are quite possibly the most wonderful things in the entire world, it is from my experience that they will inevitably cause 2 problems in a household . . .

1. requirement for all valuables to disappear

2. an over abundance of toys

Now. I will first admit, I can be a bit of a neat freak. I don't collect a lot of knick-knacks or picture frames, and I get panicked over the first inkling of clutter. Therefore, I was lucky in the standpoint of not having to get rid of a lot of things when Ross arrived.

Secondly, I will also confess Ross has been remarkably good about not getting into the things she shouldn't (i.e. plants or breakable things).

It has been my goal from the get-go to maintain a descent looking home regardless of how many children live in it. In most cases, I choose to buy things I know won't get damaged or were bought at the thrift store in which it probably only cost a few dollars anyway.

Undoubtedly, addressing the over abundance of toys has been the most difficult issue . . . especially in our little house. I've tried my very best to conceal as many toys as I can. Like in a cabinet . . .

. . . or in a basket.

I've tried to place toys in several places throughout the house that might spark her interest as opposed to . . . the plant.

Despite everything, cleaning and keeping things tidy will always be a challenge. Teaching an 18 month old how to clean up can be exhausting. Surely, we'll get there . . . one of these days.

Grady laughed when he saw these sitting on the stove yesterday. Clearly, he doesn't know fabulous when he sees it. In fact, Ross and I ran to them when we saw them sitting so lonely on the Goodwill shelf.

*sigh* Maybe I'll leave them sitting there for a few more days . . . just so I can stare at them.

Hello, Life As A Thrifter readers! My name is Veronica, and I blog at Life In The Thrifty Lane. I'm so happy to be blogging here at Holly's blog today! As you can see from the names of our blogs, we have lots in common!!

Life In The Thrifty Lane is all about crafty posts, thrifty finds, easy recipes, couponing, giveaways and much more. Recently, I also opened an Etsy shop called Nikycole (named after my daughter's nickname) where I sell magnetic tie backs for curtains and hair accessories. I'm also adding cute little gifts for the Holidays!

Today, I want to share a project I made while I was getting ready for a craft show: clothespins with chalkboard sign! My intention was to use them as price signs but they can really be used in many other ways.

I used scrapping paper, Mod Podge and round wooden circles (you can find them at any craft shop) that I spray painted with Valspar chalkboard paint.

(By the way, that is not the actual price of my headbands!!)

And after the craft show I used them in many ways, like in my pantry . . .

. . . or as gift tags! The possibilities are endless.

A Wedding Gift

One of my sweet friends got married this weekend, and I dying to do one of those cute personalized wedding projects I've been seeing all over Pinterest . . .

I came across this old "welcome" sign at the Goodwill a while ago and had been saving it for a fun project.

After a little sanding and painting.

Although, I had a few stencils for the project, I decided to make my own for the part I was lacking. I printed my letters/numbers out on card stock and cut them with an Xacto knife. (It can be a bit tedious, but totally worth it since you can print any and every font you could imagine!)

Lastly, I painted it and sanded it.

There's really nothing better than pulling off a stencil to see the finished product!

I WON! I WON!

Okay . . . okay . . . it was only eBay . . . but I haven't used eBay in years! On a whim I decided to check it out again. And, what did I find? This fabulous, old porcelain gas station light fixture- for 10 bucks!!!! I'm dying over it! I'm sure you already know where it's going, but if not, I'll just leave you guessing for now . . .

Bib/Burp Cloth Tutorial

Grady and I met a very special, new baby girl this past weekend, and we couldn't go empty-handed!

This fabric was especially noteworthy because it just so happened to belong to her grandmother. I was thrilled when Kati gave me some, but I was even more thrilled to use it for this particular project!

1. I cut my fabric and terrycloth the size I needed. I cut the burp cloth pieces 8"x18". I happened to already have a bib pattern, but if you don't, you could use an existing bib to help with the size.

2. Pin the fabrics together, right sides facing.

3. Sew fabrics together with 1/4" seam allowance. Be sure to leave a hole (back stitching at the beginning and end) so you're able to turn the fabric right side out. (You'll sew the hole later.) Also, carefully trim the extra edges and cut the corners. (This helps prevent big, thick bulges on the sides and corners.)

4. Turn the fabric right side out and iron it flat.

5. Top stitch all the way around the edge, sewing over your holes (and again back stitching at the beginning and end). You could sew on velcro or use snaps to hold your bib together at the neck. (Either of these can be found at a craft store.)

And, before you know it,

you have a bib AND a burp cloth!

DIY Laundry Room Display

I knew I wanted to use them somehow in the laundry room . . . so the other day I did a little photo session with Ross . . . and a basket of laundry. These are a few of the snapshots I got.

Then, I Mod Podged each picture to a canvas the same size.

I'd been eyeing the exact sign for the longest time (although in aqua), and low and behold, it popped up in Ross for like 6 bucks! You better believe, I snatched it right up!

This is a flea market find from last year. A little more than I wanted to pay . . . but, I think it'll totally be worth it in the end.

Lovely Laundry Rooms

I post this because, well . . . evidently, I've put off doing anything with my laundry room besides a coat of paint for 3 years now. This week I've been racking my brain with things to do in there. While I was researching (i.e. pinning), I came across these beauties . . .

I wish I could say mine was just as beautiful and cozy looking as these. I might actually want to do laundry here . . .

Home Tour: The Kitchen

Now, mind you, our kitchen is pretty small. It does, however, open up to the family room, which has always made it feel a bit larger to me. Be aware, that there's no large island or grandiose gas stove, but it's worked out pretty well for our little family of three.

You'll notice next to the windows is a seating area. This was originally meant to be a breakfast nook, and in fact, was when we were shown the house for the first time. However, I've never seen the need for this. I'm not formal, and I don't need a formal dining room. So, our house has one (very INformal) eating area . . . in the dining room.
