the Short Term Baby Gate

Okay, well, I don't know if any of you mamas out there have had a problem with this or not...but I absolutely have. I envision just that...a short-term baby gate. Because, I mean it IS short term...what? Like 2 years tops? Coming into this house, our baby gate options were horrible. With our particular set up, my choices were either: something that falls or something that destroys your banister...and well, I had no intentions of choosing either. Not to mention what an eye sore they can be! So if I'm able to take it down for company or what have you, then I certainly want that option.

If you're familiar at all with buying a house, then you know how crazy it is. Literally, walking in a house maybe twice, and then making a life altering decision to buy the thing! (And in our situation, waiting another 2 months before you're actually living there.) It's really pretty nuts, if you ask me.
Anyway, in the few times that we visited the house before we actually closed, I took a bunch of pictures of the stairwells and got to work over at Annie's...

(A small side note: I am fully aware how horrific many of these pictures are. We did this late at night on a time crunch...)

Materials:
-zip ties (size based on your measurements)
-2 bungee cords (Again, size based on your measurements, but several inches smaller. You want it to be as tight as you can when you hook it up.)
-drop cloth or fabric of your choice
-2 eye hooks (shown below)
-2 small metal rings (shown below)

The first thing I did was measure and cut my fabric. You'll need to measure the width and height of the stairwell space you intend on blocking off, adding an extra inch on the sides and an extra two inches on the top and bottom.

After it was cut, I double folded (about a 1/2 inch each fold), ironed and sewed each side down.

Next, I folded the fabric (at the top) over the bungee cord and sewed it in place (making sure to backstitch at both ends).

Now, this is the part when you'll need a little help...
Because your bungee cord will be shorter than your fabric piece, about half way in you'll need someone to pull it taut while you sew it to the end. You'll do this same thing on the bottom as well
...all while making sure you get a few sips of wine in...

Mind you, once you've finished sewing in the two bungee cords, it will look scrunched up and funny. It isn't until you actually install it that it comes together!

In order to do that, at the top we simply attached a metal ring on the zip tie and pulled it as tight as we could.

And, at the bottom we screwed in the eye hook.
The bungee hooks slide right through the metal hooks to take on and off whenever we please.

If I would have had more time to do this, I probably would have chosen a fun fabric...but in using a drop cloth, I feel like I could always come back do something fun with paint maybe? (Of course, it would have been much easier to do that sort of thing before I sewed it and it was still flat...)

(One final note: Do be aware that this may not work for every child! My little one is 18 months, and he's done great with it. He's hung on it many, many times but never once has he gone over it. There is certainly a possibility that a child could go around it, but again he's never attempted that either. I think for the most part, it's just too much effort to deal with, so he moves along. If he is hanging around it, then I try to distract him away from it, because I do realize there will come a day when he will figure it out. Of course, I'm hoping by then I'll have reached the point where I feel much more comfortable with him climbing anyway...)

I hope this is helpful, guys! It really has been over here!

Wednesday Redo: Vintage Sheets Quilt

Oh, how I wish I had the patience for this. I've accumulated quite a few fabulous sheets over the years...

and this- more than ever- makes me sad I still have them all folded up on a shelf...

Be sure to check out Blessed Serendipity to swoon a bit more!

Fun Find: A Thrift Store Grab Bag

Ohhh, the thrill!
Don't you remember how The Dollar Store used to sell kid grab bags? They were all sealed up and you had no idea what you'd find in there. The anticipation always killed me!

This week I happened upon my very own thrift store grab bag. Just like The Dollar Tree, it was all taped up, so I couldn't exactly see everything in there...not until I go home did I get to dig through my loot.

I feel pretty sure I'll put most of these goodies to good use.

Monogrammed Fall Wreath

Maybe you remember the monogrammed embriodery hoop I did several years ago...
This year I thought it might be fun to change it up and use a wreath instead. So, I used my same burlap monogram from the embroidery hoop (find that tutorial here) and simply attached it to my wreath.

Because it was larger than my wreath (and also very discolored from the sun), I had to make it smaller.

I chose to pin it back rather than cut it, just in case I wanted to put it back in the embriodery hoop again at some point.

After it was pinned, I used a needle and thread and loosely sewed it all the way around the wreath. (I doubled up on the thread to make it thicker and stronger.)

What kind of fun new fall decorations have you made thus far??
Add a link! I'd love to check them out!

The Button Pillow

Last week I was watching Ross pounce on this green button pillow and it dawned on me that I haven't talked about this project on the blog before. I made this years ago...the first year we moved in the house, in fact...and before I had even started this blog. So, I'm sad to say I don't have pictures of the project in process. However, I'm happy to reveal exactly what I did...

I found this old green pillow while thrifting with a friend one time at one of our local shops. I was immediately drawn to the velvety material and round shape. After I got it home and washed it, I started experimenting with it. I gathered up all my orange and yellow buttons and started placing them on the pillow cover in the shape of an "M." Using fabric glue, I glued each button down exactly where I liked it. Once it dried, I sewed the buttons on with embriodery thread. Later, I lightly hand drew the "M" outline with a pencil and sewed over my pencil marks with the same orange embroidery thread.

It really was a relatively simple project. The extra button sewing took a few extra minutes, but it brings me comfort when I see a certain little girl throwing it around the room...

How To Make a Vintage Banner

Remember those old sheets I've been collecting? Well, I finally finished my first project with them this weekend. (Quick side note: I've seen these banners done several different ways...in other words, there might be a better way out there. This is simply how I did it.)

First, I made a pattern...by hand drawing my shape.

Then, I traced and cut out all my pieces.

Next, I measured how far down I'd need to fold the fabric in order to fit a piece of twine through it.

I folded it down to my pen mark and sewed it down- backstitching at both ends. (An expert sewer would have ironed each piece down, then sewed. But, you already know, I'm not an expert sewer...so I didn't do that.)

This is what it looked like after I sewed it from the back.

And, lastly, the best part... I simply fed a long piece of twine through each piece...

and hung it on the wall.

Still working...but I'm pretty excited about it thus far...

Wednesday Redo: Baby's Bib

Okay. So, I guess I'm on a baby kick.
(Of course, it's all I can think about...as I sit and bounce on a medicine ball for hours on end hoping a baby will pop out...)

But, when I ran across this baby's bib tutorial made from a recycled t-shirt, I couldn't resist.

Blackout-Lined Curtains (for the Nursery)

This was my splurge.

I know, I know, you fabric people are all too familiar with the price of good fabric. It can get down right expensive...especially when you need 12 yards of it.
But, whatever. I was thrifty in other areas of the room, so surely that justifies it?!?!?
(I found the fabric HERE, if you're interested.)

I won't bore you with a tutorial on how I made these. I simply followed Allison's tutorial from House of Hepworths. It was seriously easy, guys. If you can iron and sew a straight stitch, then you can do this. I promise.
(Note: Although Allison used a bed sheet, I opted to use actual black-out liner...$5.99 a yard at Hobby Lobby. I knew this would be worth it in the end...in a nursery...with daytime sleeping.)

This is how they turned out.

'Right proud, I must say.

And, that chair.
*sigh* I can't get enough of it.

It's hard to believe, I'll soon be in it...with a baby in my arms.

A Hippy Baby Costume Tutorial (a blast from the past)

If you're a devoted follower, well then, I'm sorry to disappoint you...you've already seen this. However, in my defense, the old tutorial was looking raggedy...so I cleaned up the pictures a bit and started fresh.
(And, well, more importantly, this is my favorite costume EVER!)

This was my little girl 2 years ago at Halloween . . . our sweet, little hippy baby.
Again, I loved this costume. If it were up to me, I'd put her in it every year for the rest of her life. :) It was cheap. It was easy. And even better, comfortable. It doesn't get much better than that.

You'll need:
1 onesie
1 sheet of card stock
vintage/goodwill fabric (not much)
iron-on adhesive paper- mainly used for appliques (ask the lady at the sewing store...she'll know.)
brown (or color of choice) rick-rack (for "necklace")
brown (or color of choice) felt sheet or fabric (for peace sign)
goodwill jeans
anything that could be used as a hippy headband

Step 1: Create a pattern out of card stock/poster paper to use for the vest portion.

Step 2: Iron pieces of goodwill fabric to iron-on adhesive paper. (You can find this at any craft store. It's sold in rolls and is great for appliques. If you're confused with how it works, just ask somebody at the store. Don't be ashamed. I had to.) I ironed the paper on before I cut my pattern, because it makes the fabric stiff and easy to cut.

Step 3: Trace and cut your pattern. Peel off the adhesive backing from your iron-on paper and iron it on your onesie. (I sewed around the edges of the vest just to make it look a bit more "finished.")

Step 4: Do the same thing with the peace sign.

Step 5: Sew some rick rack around the neck to act as the "necklace."

Step 6: Peel off the adhesive backing from the back of the peace sign and iron it over the rick rack.

Add a homemade headband and a pair of holey jeans from the Goodwill . . . then, sit back and smile.

I'm still smiling...
