The Big Girl Room

I'm still not quite used to saying that, you know. But the truth of the matter is that she is...and life must go on. No more changing pad. No more crib. No more baby.
Instead, a dresser and a giant bed...and a big girl.

Check out all the previous big girl transition posts and tutorials HERE.

The Chalkboard Wall

I didn't do a whole lot of changes on this wall in the big girl room, other than the occasional chalkboard change...

And, when it is, it ususally doesn't go unnoticed.

The Big Girl Bed

This really was a quick transition. Since I knew I was keeping the alphabet wall, I didn't need a big bulky headboard. In fact, you can see there's no headboard at all. I simply bought a metal frame (from the thrift store at about $15) and put our existing mattress on top. This worked out wonderful for a transitioning toddler, especially since they are typically very low to the ground.

You already know I scored the quilt and the vintage sheet at local thrift stores and kept the pillows from the old guest room.

Mind you, it certainly doesn't always look this tidy, but I'd imagine we've got time to work on that aspect of the transition...

A Big Girl Bed: putting it together

The big girl bed transition turned out to be so much easier than I thought. Clearly she was ready...a lot like potty training, I suppose.

I couldn't bare taking down the alphabet wall, so I left that...at least while we're in this house.

I found a precious old sheet that fits her bed perfectly...

and this quilt I posted about some time ago...

and kept the pillows from the old guest room.

I guess her sweet little nursery is officially gone...
(Stay tuned.)

Frame it.

So, the needlepoint made it up this week in the big girl room. (Turns out I was wrong about calling it embroidery...sorry about that.)
Anyway, it's up along with this sweet, sweet cross-stitch I snagged up some time ago for a couple bucks. The frames I had...and used to be in the old guest room before it became a nursery.

I used Command strips for all of it but one of the large frames. (You know how I love those...)

The verdict is still out on whether or not Ross loves it...as she hasn't made much comment. Any day now...surely. :)

Would you paint a lampshade?

So, maybe you remember the little nightlight lamp from Ross's room...that I was not all too thrilled about...?

Well, a while ago I happened to salvage this left over paint sample from Home Depot for 50 cents. I stashed it along side the rest of my paint rescues and hadn't thought much about it since.
Until...my lamp.

Granted, it's not fabric paint...and the shade is clearly fabric...
But, hell. Why not?

So, I did it.

And, it worked.

Slowly but surely turning this gender neutral room into a big GIRL room.

How To Make a Vintage Banner

Remember those old sheets I've been collecting? Well, I finally finished my first project with them this weekend. (Quick side note: I've seen these banners done several different ways...in other words, there might be a better way out there. This is simply how I did it.)

First, I made a pattern...by hand drawing my shape.

Then, I traced and cut out all my pieces.

Next, I measured how far down I'd need to fold the fabric in order to fit a piece of twine through it.

I folded it down to my pen mark and sewed it down- backstitching at both ends. (An expert sewer would have ironed each piece down, then sewed. But, you already know, I'm not an expert sewer...so I didn't do that.)

This is what it looked like after I sewed it from the back.

And, lastly, the best part... I simply fed a long piece of twine through each piece...

and hung it on the wall.

Still working...but I'm pretty excited about it thus far...

Mirror Switch

Okay, so you remember the old mirror from Ross's old nursery...

and the "new" mirror going in...

Now, here it is in place.
Not painted. Rough edged. Perfect match.

I'm definitely not in love with that lamp...and would love to find or do something different. I'd also like to add a bit more to the wall around it...but that's for another post, another time...

Makin' a Change

I'm not sure if you remember the old nursery or not? It was my most favorite room in the house...but as it turns out, the little baby who used to live there, is no longer a little baby. Somehow, she became a little girl.
It's amazing how time flies right past you...

Anyway, since Ross now sleeps in a big bed, it only made sense to make a few changes. These are the three main areas I plan to make the most changes...

Crib out and big bed in.

Baby photos out and new mirror in.

Children's desk moved and new wall decor in.

It's a bit sad, but I have to admit, a little exciting at the same time... Pin It Now!
