The $10 Curtain

I gotta tell you, I really had no idea how this was going to turn out... but now that it's all said and done, I love it.
Like, really love it.

But because, I wasn't all too sure about what in the world they would look like, I bought the curtains from IKEA.

This picture actually shows 4 panels (since 2 panels come in a pack), but I only used 2 panels for this project. Each package costs $10...that's $5 a panel.
(Note: they are pretty stiff right out of the package, so I decided to wash them first. There's no doubt that loosened them up.)

The paint I used was new to me. It's a mulit-surface metallic paint, and it cost somewhere between 5-7 bucks from whatever craft store.

I didn't have a triangle stamp, so I made my own out of a foam sheet...by gluing several cut out triangles on top of one another.

Then I just stamped the curtain panels one at a time.
I knew there'd be no way to line every triangle up perfectly throughout the panel, so I intentionally stamped them randomly...as to make sure it didn't look like a perfect pattern.

Based on the size of Ross's room, I realized one panel per window was enough, so I tied them back with a piece of jute and a Command hook.

Crazy, they've only been up for 2 days now... but for some reason they feel as though they've always been there... like maybe her room is complete.

Could that mean it's time for the very first room tour in our new house...???

The Girl's Room

Okay. So we last left off with "Dogwood White and the half wall..."

Well, this is how it turned out...

and let me tell you, I'd do it all over again...and again...and again.
I don't know how, but it ended up being exactly what I was hoping for.

Oh, but there's more...

What I'm workin' with... (in the girls room)

So, it's been almost 4 whole months since we moved in the new house. After our offer was accepted on the house, I frantically took as many pics as I could to help me get an idea of what needed to be done.
This was Ross's room before it was offically ours...

Several things I really loved about the room...but, the paint was not one of them. So naturally, that was the first thing on my agenda...

And although I tried hard to avoid it, I knew Ross's first love was pink. So, for weeks I searched...hoping and praying I wouldn't choose something so overbearing, vomit in your face, pink. Because I've seen it. Too many times. And, it scared me...terribly.

I finally settled on this: Dogwood White by Sherwin Williams. (On the paint strip it's even lighter.)
It still scared me. But, I gave in and went with it.

Next was...how was I going to use it?

I fell upon this Apartment Therapy tour some time ago and fell. in. love.
(It's a precious tour. You should definitly check it out.)
The half wall idea made me change my tune totally!
In fact, I started to even get excited about using the color pink!

From there...the juices started flowing...
Stay tuned.

The Ole Train Case Redo

Well, I've had a great run these past few years on the blog...doing a project right before it was due and it actually working the way I planned...but this time, not so much...

Hahaha! So with that, THIS is you RRR project this month...

If you've been here a time or two, then you already recognize this project.
Yep. I've done this before. And it turned out perfectly...
flawless, I might even suggest.
(okay, maybe not that good...but, pretty darn good!)

However, this go around wasn't quite the same.
Here's what I was working with:

For starters, my paint couldn't match up. (Sorry, Valspar...but you don't quite make the cut for this particular project.) It scaped right off and even felt wet in several places even after several days of drying. I kept hoping it just had too much moisture and needed more drying time...but nothing changed.

So, here I am... resorting back to my original post...over a year ago.
Here's what I started with then...

And here it was finished.
Pretty easy, really. It was a matter of taping off and using RUSTOLEUM spray paint..."candy pink," to be exact. No scraps, scratches, rips or tears in over a year, I'm happy to admit.

And, it's clearly been a hit...with the prince and princess, that is...

Now, you've GOTTA check out the other cool projects this month...you know, the ones that we're big fat FAILS. ;)

Surely things will work out better next month...;)

Cannonball Bed REDO

Alright...well, I do know this isn't the most original RRR project in the world (because who hasn't painted a piece of furniture?), but y'all, it had to be done. And, if I can help the one person out there that hasn't painted a piece of furniture before, then so be it.
Let's get to it.

You may disagree, but I've always liked this style of bed...and luckily my parents listened when I told them I'd love to have theirs whenever they decided to get rid of it.
Bed...free.

The first step I took was sanding...just enough to take the shine off really.

Next I primed it...2 coats of Kiltz.
Quart of Kiltz- $8.

Lastly, I painted...2 coats of aqua (Vaspar's Woodlawn Charm, to be exact).
Although I typically rough up anything I paint, this one I decded to leave alone (Besides the scratches I made trying to put the mattress and box springs in place by myself. Ugh.).
It's a nice change, I think.
Quart of Valspar custom color- $15.

Total cost- 23 bucks.

I'm also fully aware how blank and bare it is in here.
That's coming...

...eventually.

Now go check out the other cool RRR projects for this month!

Wednesday Redo: Altered Thrift Art

One of the beauties of thrifting, is never knowing what you'll find. I love that.
Maybe you'll find exactly what you're looking for...or maybe you'll end up making it your own...
I'm still in love with Gram's nursery art from the thrift store...but how cool is THIS!?!?!?

You can find more like this particular piece HERE.

an IKEA hack

...which also happens to be my very first.

Surely you've seen this light...
Well, as much as I loved it in black, I really wanted a color...something bold and bright!

So I went for it.

And man, am I glad I did...

I've still got a ways before revealing the whole room to you, but here's a start.

Wednesday Redo: Thrift Store Vases

Even if you don't frequent a thrift store, chances are you've seen these before. In fact, I'm not sure I've ever been in one where I didn't see one or two.

...and when you know what they can look like with a little tlc, the 50 cent price tag seems even better than too good to be true.

OHHH, how I love this idea!
What a smart use of an old, cheap, good-for-nothing drawer!

Thrift Store Catch-All

Well, while all of you are probably preparing for the Fourth, I'm still organizing and unloading things around here.  In the midst of organizing here at the new house, I realized I didn't have a place for keys and such.  Laying them on the counter almost completely does me in...and unfortuantely I don't have a spot for my trusty, old catch-all shutter from the other house...
So...in comes this month's RRR project!

I found THIS for, you got it...a dollar.

I have to admit, I liked it just the way it was a lot...but I think for the particular space I'm putting it, it needed a splash of color.

After I sprayed it, I traced back over the writing (that I could still see under the paint) with a white, fine tip paint pen.

It's hard to tell from this picture, but I lightly hand sanded it around the edges...just to rough it up a bit.
It seemed a little more appropriate like that. :)

There's still much to do around here...but I'll get there.
At some point.

Okay! Now go check out all the other fun RRR projects!
